I love this picture.

orangutans are evolving!

A male orangutan, clinging precariously to overhanging branches, flails the water with a pole, trying desperately to spear a passing fish.

It is the first time one has been seen using a tool to hunt.
The extraordinary image, a world exclusive, was taken in Borneo on the island of Kaja, where apes are rehabilitated into the wild after being rescued from zoos, private homes or even butchers’ shops.

“Orang hutan” means “forest man” in one of Indonesia’s many languages and our long-armed cousins do indeed show a remarkable ability to mimic our behaviour.

This individual had seen locals fishing with spears on the Gohong River.

Although the method required too much skill for him to master, he was later able to improvise by using the pole to catch fish already trapped in the locals’ fishing lines.

The image is part of a series taken for a new book, The Thinkers Of The Jungle, which also includes the first photograph of an orangutan swimming.

You cant make up stuff like this:

Lynchings in Congo as penis theft panic hits capital
By Joe Bavier

KINSHASA, April 22 (Reuters Life!) - Police in Congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men’s penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft.

Reports of so-called penis snatching are not uncommon in West Africa, where belief in traditional religions and witchcraft remains widespread, and where ritual killings to obtain blood or body parts still occur.

Rumours of penis theft began circulating last week in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo’s sprawling capital of some 8 million inhabitants. They quickly dominated radio call-in shows, with listeners advised to beware of fellow passengers in communal taxis wearing gold rings.

Purported victims, 14 of whom were also detained by police, claimed that sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear, in what some residents said was an attempt to extort cash with the promise of a cure.

“You just have to be accused of that, and people come after you. We’ve had a number of attempted lynchings. … You see them covered in marks after being beaten,” Kinshasa’s police chief, Jean-Dieudonne Oleko, told Reuters on Tuesday.

Police arrested the accused sorcerers and their victims in an effort to avoid the sort of bloodshed seen in Ghana a decade ago, when 12 suspected penis snatchers were beaten to death by angry mobs. The 27 men have since been released.

“I’m tempted to say it’s one huge joke,” Oleko said.

“But when you try to tell the victims that their penises are still there, they tell you that it’s become tiny or that they’ve become impotent. To that I tell them, ‘How do you know if you haven’t gone home and tried it’,” he said.

Some Kinshasa residents accuse a separatist sect from nearby Bas-Congo province of being behind the witchcraft in revenge for a recent government crackdown on its members.

“It’s real. Just yesterday here, there was a man who was a victim. We saw. What was left was tiny,” said 29-year-old Alain Kalala, who sells phone credits near a Kinshasa police station. PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE AS AN UNBELIEVER, THREATS OR VIOLENCE? I REALLY WANT TO HEAR YOUR STORY, OR YOUR OPINION.

Today I was given a clear threat by a so called christian. It is certainly the first time that happens because I do not resolve to violence, just decent conversation and arguments with those that call themselves religious.

I have no idea when it all started, I was having a conversation with a few people that were giving booklets away and who were young earth creationists. The young man did not know much about science (as they usually do) and directed me to his older companion who, after thinking a little bit, told me that evolution ‘was just a theory’. In a rather condescending way if i might add. Then this other gentleman came by and started to counter my arguments with the usual ‘but where did life come from?, nothing cant come from something’ argument. We conversed for about 5 minutes and then i left simply because I had to go to class.
That was months ago, I kept brushing shoulders with him and once or twice he would tell me that I was wrong to believe something (that there is no god) to too much of an extreme. How @#%#@#% ironic to get that from someone who has an imaginary friend!.

Then a few weeks ago, a very infamous religious agitator came to the university. He came with his rethoric of hatred and intolerance. he came with propaganda for creationism, the abolishment of secularism and ‘expelled’ whistles. Oh people were there to argue with him, the Catholics were there, the muslims were there, everyone was there. They were offended, you could see it in their eyes (well some were very happy fundamentalists). Certainly the president of the Atheist organization was there, doing nothing. Was I going to let it go?, what would you do?

I did what came to mind, I went straight to the library and checked out a 200 year old German book called Valhalla. A book on norse mythology with a very pretty cover (it really looked religious!). So i went into the circle and I started to counter preach him. I used his style and ways of speaking- a satire of himself.

Oh he was pissed!, it of course took him a while to realize what was going on. he was so angry!, this is a guy that doesnt care if you spit on him. He was yelling at me “excuse me!, we reserved this spot!”. ofcourse he was right by the american flag (you know, that place that everyone calls the free speech area). Ofcourse you cant reserve that area, his host organization only reserved to have a table nearby. It was scary, I am myself a chicken hearted coward and there i was in the middle of a super conservative university making my point against religion.

(on a side note, Bush senior, the guy that was quoted by saying that atheists are not really american citizens or patriots has his presidential library there)
Things calmed down and I simply left to my own class. I returned later and simply enjoyed conversation with moderates on the usual topics: DINOSAURS AND HUMANS DID NOT LIVE TOGETHER!

Well that was that. if you have been following my blog (which you arent :P ) the same day that I went to the second meeting of the Christian Crusade for Christ, some person gave me a paper for some event that talked about god and his answers. Whatever, my Socratic persona came out and started to ask him stuff like all other serious religious people that i encounter. Then the person (the guy that threatened me) came by and said something and left. Well whatever, i said thanks to the person giving away flyers and then i got myself a free bible. I proceeded to go to Campus crusade for christ and had an ok time.

Well this brings us to today, I hope that i didn’t lost you with an explanation of the past. Today I was minding my own business, walking in very well known parts of the university and he was there. He was sitting in the stairs with some people and started talking to me.

“Remember that time that you did that (I think he was referring to the christian agitator(campus evangelists)), I was so angry that i wanted to punch you. How was everything? do you keep arguing against religion? I really see no logic in getting out of your way to do all this. I really dont. I am warning you right now. you really make me angry”

I was to be frank a little bit shocked, my responses were not the best. Just simple things like ‘you have your opinions and that is you constitutional right to express them’ or something like that.

I started to walk off but he wanted me to stay and listen (which of course i couldn’t because i had to go to freaking class). Sure i told him that if he wanted to tell me something that bad, that he could walk me to my class. All in a friendly and smiling way.

he came a little bit close and said “are you an illegal immigrant? because if you are coming here to attack my country...”

I told him that I wasnt… (anyone with a brain knows that illegal immigrants cant enter universities due to lack of paperwork…) and second, wtf, came to attack his country? I am assuming that he meant verbally. I am not here to attack this country, I am here to defend the real constitutional rights and secularism that this country was founded upon. I had enough and left.

this all greatly disturbed me because it had never happened before. There is fear, i can feel it. But as Christopher hitchers usually says “if you arent angering them, you arent trying hard enough”… ok that might not be the actual quote but you get the point.

The day came to an end after class. I went to the library and checked out 5 books for a paper and there he was (if i was religious i would call it a sign from the heavens!). No, not the guy that threatened me, but an old friend that I had made in the Atheist Student group. I walked a little bit with him to learn that the group had not died out. In actuality they were now an activist organization and meet outside of campus on a local restaurant!. The atheists were there, i just didnt know!. And that is the happy ending, I shall go to their meetings soon. Maybe to plot something for the expelled movie?

PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE AS AN UNBELIEVER, THREATS OR VIOLENCE? I REALLY WANT TO HEAR YOUR STORY, OR YOUR OPINION.

The Field Manual of Militant Atheism: Mormonism April 14, 2008

We all had to deal with them at one point or another if you live in the United States, girls with smiles and very long skirts or boys in bicycles and black ties that come to your home and annoy you. However Mormonism or LSD… i mean LDS (latter day saints) became big news recently due to Mitt Romney in the race of the Republican nomination.
People started to have a closer look at this religion, and to me quite frankly anyone can run for president.. as long as they keep their religion at home and don’t intend to change the fact that this is a secular republic.

So what are the strengths of Mormonism?
1: Devoted members that like to travel.
2: Families of 8-12 children… is all about the future generations.
3: Magical Underwear.
4: Travel in pairs.
5: They Practically own Utah.

The Strategy:
You wont see them worship or pray in public, but this wont be a problem for you to encounter them. They will come to you and trust me, you will know who they are.

Well first here is a crash course in Mormon Religion. Pay attention.

Should you throw heavy science like evolution at them? don’t even worry about it, they have so many holes in their religion alone that you shouldn’t have any trouble at all.

First of all the first edition of the Book of Mormon had many grammatical errors (perhaps as many as this blog). For example the 1830 edition has sentences such as: “Adam and Eve, which was our first parents” and “This he done that he might subject them”. But you know, give J. Smith a break!, they didn’t have computers back then, is hard to be divinely inspired when you don’t have spell check.
And how do you explain that there were several verses that were exactly the same as the King James Bible?

For some religions, the word ‘dinosaur’ will immediately win an argument (at least back in the old days), but on regards to Mormonism all that you have to say is ‘horse’. According to the book of Mormon there were horses in North America around the time of Jesus. But wait a minute… Horses went extinct a long time ago in the continent (10,000 years or so) and were re-introduced by the Spanish and other Europeans. So how exactly did tribes have horses 2000 years ago? they didn’t.

Similar arguments can be made on the appearance of Elephants, Swine, Barley and other agricultural elements in the book that simply were not here prior to the columbian exchange. (well they could be talking about elephants as mammoths… right…)

We can go on and on and on about the archaeological evidence. There were no literate, white tribes that knew of Egyptian and Hebrew. No evidence of the use of Iron or steel, and of course there were no chariots.
If they had these technologies even at the arrival of the Spanish, it would have been a heck of a lot harder for Cortez to take Tenochtitlan.

Well there is also Genetics and linguistics to show that its pure non sense.

Ok, once you get all that to support yourself, then you have to remember about sexual repression, sexism, racism and homophobia.

Well I am not going to go into the problems of their theology, and the criticism that other religions have with Mormonism.
This guide is merely a way for you to raise consciousness, I would be surprised if any mormon could see the light of reality. As always, expect crackpot explanations to what I just mentioned.

Oh yeah.. the magic underwear…

and just for fun… (are they mormons? still fun!)*

*I do not encourage any physical aggression towards religion. Just reason & Science!. Do it the Dawkins Way!

I love classical music (or at least the majority) and I was delighted when I found this little gem on youtube the other day. Its apparently a modern version of a song I had never heard before. It is by violinist Vanessa Mae.

I am now on the search for one of her CDs.

Have you ever wondered what it feels to be an anthropologist studying a tribe in an exotic far away land out of the reaches of civilization? Well i had that experience and it was rather peculiar.

It all started last week on one of my random walks around the university, I encountered a table full of cookies that were being given away. Ah! but there was a catch for the cookies, a short and quick poll and survey. Surely enough i looked for it and it was the usual questions of how you feel about god, how it affects your life, i am sure that you are familiar with that old and usual jargon.

Well surely enough i tried to my best ability to answer those questions and then proceeded to ask the people there about religion (Socrates style). Well i wasn’t surprised, they turned out to be new earth creationists. God! (pardon the expression) I am really getting sick of encountering people that believe the world is 6000 years old and dinosaurs lived happily with humans at the same time. Well i stood  my ground and provided my arguments about morality, history, evolution, reason and philosophy. Well as expected the usual response to most of these questions revolved around not only faith, but the most basic understanding of science and evolution. And they know this, they admitted it by saying something of the like of “well, i really dont know much about evolution…”.

How can they oppose something with such convictions if they dont even know it? They just know pre fabricated arguments like “you know there are some footprints in texas of people and dinosaurs? plenty of proof!”. Well thats not the point, i had to go to class and left.

If you were wondering, i didnt actually grabbed a cookie and ate it. but i did keep a pencil. As I left a girl there asked me to come to their weekly meeting. I told her that i would think about it.
Well the time came and surely enough i went (for some reason the Atheist student organization isnt even holding meetings now days…). I sat there and I was welcomed in a very warm way. specially by the girl that invited me. She sat with me and we conversed about religion. By the time the music was going to start, we left the room and went outside. We sat on the table and continued to talk. it was a very nice chat, despite her lack of knowledge about evolution she was quite curious and made sure that she didnt meant to try to convert me in any way. The thing ended, there was a social, but i didnt go. However i did promise to show up the on the next meeting.

Second meeting:

So here came the second meeting, this time the people were just as warm and welcoming as before. But do know that i wasnt openly atheist to people that i meet. But i wasnt hiding it either, those that asked got a true reply from me. But everyone was sure that i was a christian, i was holding a bible too btw (some guy gave it to me earlier that day).
Well this time I did not sit by the nice girl, this time i actually had a chance to pay full attention to the power point and the words that were being said from the people at the front. And i have to say that I felt exactly the same way that i did when i was a young child in my old catholic church.. Empty. All of their sayings and questions were very terribly empty. Unlike the catholics that sometime challenge the rational mind with arguments from Aquinas, these people really had nothing going on. I really didnt understand, I really felt like those people in the discovery channel when they are witnesses of religious rites and ceremonies to ancient gods and deitys. This is nowhere as self evident as the last 30 minutes of singing that took place at the end. a trance like state that got a hold of people. Well a very small number. The feeling that these people are really backwards, and not much different than aztecs or maya worshiping their many ancient gods. As an atheist you can really see the world outside the bubble of religion.

But I also felt something else, specially since there are socials after every event. This time it was at someones house and it incorporated juice, queso and chips and some games. It was fun, but I had the same feeling that people were going to these religious services the same way that I had to wait through hours of prayer on christmas day.

People have the feeling that for having fun and partying and eating (despite being in a non promiscuous non alcoholic way (some of them) they had to pay in return hours of prayer and devotion. As if they owed something back to the god.

I dont know if you are following what i mean. after the service these people were just like any other people. making jokes and being crazy as any college student. Just like on catholic christmas day, you remain quiet and attend mass, but right after it you get the great fun, food, games, presents.

What would be of the faith of these people without the socials and fun afterwards? Are these people only part of this organization for the social activity and the sense of belonging? Certainly i felt that the social afterwards made up for the boring wait at the religious ceremony and rather lame music. There is possible the ‘feel good’ effect of bragging to others how great of a Christian you are.

As for me, I will go to the next meeting and the one after it. i will really befriend these people, they are not stupid really. They are very nice and i dont really think that I can hate them. Dont hate the religious person, hate the religion itself. Lets see how much a wolf in a flock of sheep can do to bring reason to the minds of the believers.

To be continued….
